The Technical Operations team takes safety in instructional labs very seriously. An emergency response guide can be found near the entrance to each lab, which provides details on where to go in the case of emergency. Please review the following safety measures before using the lab space.
Food and drink are not to be consumed in the lab space. Leave water bottles inside your bag, and step out of the lab if you need to refresh yourself.
Bags and coats should always be placed or hung on the appropriate racking in the lab. Extraneous items should never be placed near or hung over the chairs.
In case of injury, inform your TA and come to AV Williams 1338 for first aid. Depending on the severity of the injury, an individual may be assigned to take you to the Health Center. An injured student should not be sent to the Health Center alone, and without alerting the Technical Operations team.
In case of fire, neither students nor TAs should operate a fire extinguisher. Pull a fire alarm if one is not already sounding, and exit the building safely. The Technical Operations team must be made aware of any lab fires, even if they are minor or extinguished.
Certain labs, such as ENEE473 and Capstone courses, may require additional training before using hazardous equipment. Students must take this training before using the equipment.
Safety goggles must always be worn while operating a soldering iron. Goggles and ventilation are provided with every soldering station in labs that use this equipment. If your soldering iron does not have a warning sticker on it or your lab does not have the appropriate protective equipment, do not operate the equipment and inform the Technical Operations team.
Teaching labs and office hour rooms are operational between the hours of 8am and 6pm per the lab access policy. A TA or instructor must accompany students inside the lab at all times, and if the lab space does not have a window, the door must remain open. Labs are not to be used for purposes outside of that course's material, and must be vacant outside of operational hours unless an instructor is present.
